Everywhere we look there are references to the power- and joys-of social media. So what is it? Checking out a video on YouTube, posting a blog, or tweeting on Twitter are all social media.  Basically, instead of just being able to read something on a website that gives you information, you are able to respond and give your thoughts on the matter and interact with other visitors to the website, whether through a blog, a social network or a virtual community.

A blog is like a personal journal that you can update with regular entries that are called posts.  You can blog about whatever strikes your fancy such as what is happening on the news or if you have a special talent.  You can post pictures, videos and music on your blog along with your text entry.  Platforms like WordPress.com and Blogger.com are free for basic blogs. Go ahead and express yourself!

Social networks have become part of everyday life for many, especially the younger generations. Many have discovered that it can be quite addictive keeping track of what is happening in our friends’ lives and communicating with children away at school, relatives that live far away and especially old classmates. Facebook.com, MySpace.com (for the younger set), YouTube, and Twitter are all great ways to keep in touch.

There are also virtual communities where you can discuss like interests.  These sites often offer fun incentives to keep users coming back. Check out Care2.com if you would to help make the world a greener place or dogster.com if you love talking about anything dog related.  There are so many different communities; certainly there will be one that interests you that you can join. Go ahead and explore.

And for gaming fans, there are multiplayer online games where you can create an avatar (an online character) to play and explore online worlds. Many adults can’t get enough of games like Second Life and Farmville.  You don’t have to be a child or teen to play.  Have fun!
